Festivity of La Verge de la Font

On the third Sunday in May, the festivity of La Verge de la Font is celebrated. There is a chapel dedicated to La Verge de la Font, where a 15th-century stone image 32 centimetres tall was venerated in the niche in the frontispiece. This standing statue of the Virgin had the peculiarity of carrying the Child on her right arm. The Virgin wore a royal crown, with a fleur de lis and parted hair that fell abundantly over both shoulders, a tunic with a belt at the waist and a pleated cloak, which she gathered up with both hands while holding the Child. He was wearing a tunic and holding a little bird in his hands. There were traces of gold on the Virgin’s crown and in the Child’s hair. This image was destroyed in 1936. Later, pieces of it were found by some local people and it was reconstructed. Recently, the Restoration Service of Castelló Provincial Council took charge of restoring the image with the best possible finish and correcting the various anomalies and imperfections detected in order to make it as close as possible to its original state. The result has been very satisfactory for all of the local people, especially the members of the board in charge of its safekeeping, who also made a commemorative pedestal. The image has once again been placed in its traditional place of veneration.
